Luxor temple in Egypt
Luxor Temple
The Luxor temple was in the south of Thebes, so the ancient Egyptians called it the South Temple.
This temple is also one of the most important temples in Luxor, as they called it the Trinity of Thebes because in the past they worshipped three gods, Amun-Ra, his wife, and their son, whom they called the Theban Trinity.
In the New Kingdom, the kings of the 18th and 19th Dynasties constructed this temple, where many kings participated in its construction, but the most important achievements of Amenhotep III, Ramses II, and other kings put part of this great temple, which made it one of the most beautiful temples in Egypt.
Temple history
Some historians suggest that it dates back to the Middle Kingdom, But the first to start building the temple we see today was certainly a king of the 18th dynasty, Amenhotep III, by his priest and architect, Amenhotep bin Hapo.
Then the kings like Thutmose and Tutankhamun added things like private palaces for the god Amun, except King Ramses II, who constructed a large hall.
The location of this temple is close to Karnak Temple, the largest temple in Egypt, and this temple was constructed as an image of the god Amun, who appears in it as a god of fertility.
This temple is also unique in that it has a large and impressive entrance where they have painted a lot of things on it, For example, Ramses II painted on it his victories and battles, the most important of which was the Battle of Kadesh, as well as the battles of other dynasties, such as the 25th Dynasty.
What's inside the temple?
In this temple, a road called the Way of the Rams was constructed for the king to pass through. But after him came the kings of the Thirtieth Dynasty and built another road called the Sphinx Road, which they made for the king or god.
King Ramses II constructed two obelisks there, and they were painted with the titles of King Ramses and the shape of monkeys, and this is the most unique thing that distinguishes them, but there is one now that is not in Egypt but was stolen and taken to France, and Ramses also built a large edifice that reaches 65 meters and is characterized by many wonderful antiquities and objects inside. It is considered one of the most important things in Egypt.
There are also palaces in the area named after Thutmose III, which are made of red granite and are distinguished by the shape of stalks called papyrus stalks (papyrus stalks), which are made of red granite.
There are three vessels, each representing a god, with Amun in the middle, his wife in the west, and his son in the east, and there is a mosque founded in the Ayyubid era near these monuments.
All these wonderful monuments are located in a hall built by King Ramses II, and there are also many statues of this king, some standing and others sitting, some in black granite and others in pink granite.
There are many wonderful statues of other kings and queens, so it is a wonderfully decorated temple that is worth visiting to see the splendor and creativity of the ancient Egyptians in the era of the New Kingdom.
