Bent Pyramid in Egypt

info about King Snefru’s Bent Pyramid

  • 05 16, 2023

The Bent Pyramid, in the Dahshur archaeological area, is one of the most important pyramidal forms in the world, and one of the most important architectural manifestations from the reign of King Sneferu (ca. 2600 BC), as it was opened to the public yesterday, after the completion of restoration work.

Sneferu, the founder of the Fourth Dynasty during the Old Kingdom, was characterized by the expansion of foreign trade, sending disciplinary campaigns, and mining campaigns, and he and his engineer and advisor Imhotep reached the complete form of the pyramid, where he built several pyramids that remain to this day.

According to what the Egyptian archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass, the former Minister of Antiquities, mentions in his book "Antiquities and Secrets - Part One", those studying antiquities consider Snefru to be one of the greatest Egyptian builders for about 4560 years, as four pyramids are now attributed to him. You can come to Egypt and enjoy your vacation with the Cairo Top Tours team who will reveal the secrets of ancient civilization for you during your Egypt Classic Tours with certified Egyptologists.

The reason for the name of the pyramid is “Bent” Some archeologists assume that the inclination of the angel of the pyramid was due to the heavy weight of the rocks that were used in building the pyramid. Another opinion is that there was an issue during the process of construction. Therefore, King Senfru decided to build another pyramid to be his tomb in the afterlife. Egypt Tours FAQ

It is called the "Bent Pyramid" due to its unusual shape. The pyramid starts with a steep angle but then changes to a shallower angle about halfway up, giving it a bent appearance. This change in angle was likely made to prevent structural instability.

The most popular idea is that a pyramid called Meidum, which was built by the same person who built the Bent Pyramid, fell down while the Bent Pyramid was being built. So, the people who were building the Bent Pyramid changed the way they were building it to make sure it wouldn't fall down too.

The Bent Pyramid was built using large limestone blocks quarried from nearby sources. Workers would have used sledges and ramps to transport the massive stones and place them in position. The unique design of the pyramid required careful planning and engineering to achieve the change in angle.
