The Best Day Trips from Luxor to Cairo

Overview

We are heading to Cairo to provide additional information since Egypt is so full of archaeological riches that many of its wonders are still mostly unknown to visitors.

The pyramids of Giza are far from unique in Egypt, where there are at least 118. News of them is still being discovered today. The oldest one to have survived is that of Pharaoh Djoser, standing at 62 meters tall. Construction began in 2650 BC, making it the oldest stone structure in the world... no less.

Despite their more than venerable age, the Pyramids of Giza are the only one of the wonders of the ancient world to have survived. The other six were all victims of fire, earthquake, or catastrophe. The pyramids owe their survival to two factors: their simple yet robust design was far better designed to withstand the wear and tear of time than that of other wonders. Also, the surrounding desert sand partially buried them for millennia, protecting them from erosion. Enjoy with us and discover more information on your trip from Luxor to Cairo thanks to your Anglophone guide.

Exploring the Saqqara sites will allow you to see the evolution of Egyptian pyramid construction techniques. It also provides a perfect introduction before exploring their more famous counterparts, the pyramids of Giza.

Egypt is best visited in the winter, from October to March.  More precisely, what time of year is ideal for seeing the Pyramids of Giza?  We'll transport you there after the morning rush hour, from 10 a.m. to noon, if it's winter.  By doing this, you may steer clear of the people and fog that block your vision.  We'll set up a morning visit if you're coming in the summer (April to September) to beat the heat.

Itinerary

To go to your domestic flight, you will be taken to the airport.  Our driver and guide will meet you when you arrive at Cairo Airport.  The Giza Pyramids will be on your itinerary.

We have to go back 5 millennia to learn about the history of these exceptional sites. It was around 3100 BC that Pharaoh Narmer achieved the feat of unifying Upper and Lower Egypt. He then decided to found a capital at the point where the Nile transforms into a fertile delta. Thus, Memphis became one of the most important cities of all antiquity.

From the beginning of this dynasty, pharaohs and nobles decided to build their tombs on the Saqqara plateau. This vast desert site was a perfect choice for two reasons. First, it was located high up and was therefore never exposed to the devastating floods of the Nile. Second, it represented the final frontier of life before the world of death since it was situated at the entrance to the vast Sahara Desert.  You will be taken to a nearby restaurant to eat before you visit Saqqara.

The Giza pyramids were not the earliest pyramids in Egypt, as we have already discussed.  That distinction, however, belongs to the Step Pyramid of Zoser. And their shape allows us to understand the process by which the pyramids emerged: initially, in the first dynasties of Egypt, during the Old Kingdom, the burial system for rulers and members of high society was the mastabas (truncated pyramid). However, they went a step further and layered many of these shortened pyramid buildings on top of the Pyramid of Zoser (the Third Dynasty king), until they arrived at the pyramid as it is today.  Its height is 62.5 meters, and its base is 121 by 109 meters.

You will have a boat trip on the Nile before heading back to the airport to take in the sunset and the ancient Egyptian belief that the goddess Nut would devour the sun.

When visiting religious sites in Egypt, it's respectful to dress modestly. Both men and women should avoid wearing revealing clothing. Women may want to cover their shoulders and knees, and it's common for them to carry a scarf or shawl to cover their heads when entering mosques. It's important to respect local customs and traditions when visiting these sacred places.

Yes, the public can visit the Tomb of Queen Nefertari, but only with a separate, more costly ticket because of its exceptional state and restricted attendance to protect the paintings.
