Tour To Abdeen Palace: Explore a Historic Cairo Palace

Overview

Today's excursion is noteworthy because it will be visiting the Abdeen Palace Museums, which mix the authenticity of the past with a modern style, giving it a unique character that sets it apart from other museums. Cairo is home to several distinctive historical and archeological museums.  Originally the formal residence of the Khedive, the palace now serves as a historic and recreational destination, giving it a distinct tale to tell.

The idea of building Abdeen Palace was one of the cornerstones of Khedive Ismail's plan to build modern Cairo. As soon as he took the throne of Egypt in 1863, he ordered the establishment of the palace. Abdeen, one of Muhammad Ali Pasha's military commanders, kept its name and lived there before its development and demolition. After Abdeen Bey's death, Khedive Ismail bought the palace from his widow, demolished it, and added vast lands to it to begin construction. He expanded its area to 24 acres and then built a huge, beautifully designed palace with exquisite decorations that combined many arts around its walls.

He kept his name, making the current Abdeen Palace one of the architectural masterpieces in Cairo's history. Abdeen Palace was the seat of government for the royal family in Egypt from 1872 until 1952. It was later inhabited by his son, Khedive Muhammad Tawfiq, then Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, then Sultan Hussein Kamal, and finally King Fuad.
