Half-Day private Tour to Memphis

Overview

Take advantage of our private trip of Memphis and discover more about its history.  Memphis is said to have been established by the mythical Menes, Egypt's first monarch. This king unified the country for the first time and brought it out of prehistory. The city's name was initially "the white wall" due to a limestone stepped enclosure wall. Memphis, which was ideally situated on the west bank of the Nile, between the desert plateau and the cultivated land, at the junction of the delta and the valley, became the capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt from around 2780 to 2280 thanks to the magnificent temple of Ptah.

Memphis served as a hub for government and religion and was also the home of the monarchs who erected their tombs close to the city.  Memphis got its name, Men Nefer, from the settlement devoted to maintaining the pyramid of Pepi I, ruler of the 6th Dynasty.  The city was also a major port, possibly the first in ancient Egypt since, prior to the Greco-Roman era, when Alexander the Great constructed Alexandria in 331 AD, the alluvium and sandbanks prevented the construction of ports on the shore.

In addition, Memphis specialized in weapons manufacturing. It was the country's arsenal. This bustling place was susceptible to foreign influences: in Memphis, foreign deities are worshipped alongside the traditional Apis.

The mosque was like a special building that showed why Mohammad Ali was a powerful ruler. Mohammad Ali wanted to make something that everyone would recognize, so he built a mosque. He designed it to look like the old Ottoman buildings, and he put it inside a fortress.
