Trip to Valley of the Whales and Wadi El Rayan

Overview

An unforgettable day trip to Wadi Al-Hitan (Valley of the Whales) and Wadi El Rayan in the ungodly Fayoum Desert offers a spectacular view of Egypt’s natural and prehistoric wonders. The excursion begins with a scenic drive from Cairo towards the Western Desert, away from the urban landscape. Wadi-Al-Hitan, being a World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO, has 40-million-year-old fossilized whale skeletons on display for visitors to walk This offers a magnificent yet very surreal glimpse into the ancient marine world of Locar-Ish.

Here in the Valley of Whales, enter the outdoor fossil museum to cast your eyes on well-preserved fossilized remains of marine life from prehistoric times, including ancient whales with traces of limbs. The guide will tell you how this submerged seabed became ranked among the most crucial paleontological sites in the world. What surrounds you is almost a surreal setting in the middle of the desert, where perhaps in-between, you will begin appreciating the evolution of this planet and the forces of nature behind it. This portion of the tour supplies a grand mix of science, nature, and adventure, of which there is nothing very similar anywhere else in Egypt.

From here, head to Wadi El Rayan, which is a natural reserve characterized by its two lakes, incredible waterfalls, and wildlife. Free time is given to chill by the waters, watch migratory birds, and soak in the rare oasis setting where desert meets water. For some adrenaline, sandboarding and 4x4 dune rides can be thrown in for good measure.

With your guide, explore the on-site museum and fossil trail, learning how this remote desert was once a vast prehistoric sea. The spooky landscapes, littered with fossil bones and spectacular rock formations, are an out-of-this-world and unforgettable experience.

After visiting Wadi Al-Hitan, visit the nearby Wadi El Rayan Nature Reserve, a protected nature reserve renowned for its peaceful lakes, rolling dunes, and dramatic desert cliffs. Spend time enjoying the Wadi El Rayan Waterfalls, Egypt's only natural waterfalls, where clean water cascades through desert rock. Keep an eye out for local animals such as white gazelles and desert foxes, and spend time taking photos or just sitting beside the water. At your option, you can also participate in a sandboarding excursion or a traditional boat tour on the upper lake.

Enjoy a local lunch in a rustic eco-lodge or Bedouin-style camp, where you’ll sample authentic Egyptian dishes in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature. After lunch, unwind before beginning your return drive, passing through picturesque desert landscapes and rural villages. You’ll arrive back at your hotel by evening, having experienced the awe of prehistoric wonders and the natural beauty of Egypt’s lesser-known treasures.
