Its history
It was settled by Nubians and they named it Geneina Natron, after the English used it later in the late nineteenth century as a military base and called it the island of the Sardar, but King Fuad I changed its name to be the King's island, until the Egyptian revolution in July 1952, to order the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser to finally call it the island of plants ،
Its area
The island of plants has worked on an area of 17 acres, and was divided into the form of 7 sectors of rare and perennial plant life, for which suitable climatic conditions are created by plastic greenhouses as follows :
Wooden tree collection: Ebony, mahogany, and sandalwood.
Tropical fruit trees: papaya and jackfruit.
Spice plants: ziyata and brown pepper.
Ornamental plants: elderberry, Jasmine, jaronia, Tulip, Petunia.
Oil plants: oil palm, coconut palm, olive trees.
Construction
There are palm trees on both sides of the corridors, and a museum of plant and Aquatic Biology has been established on the island, making it a destination for all those interested in studying geology and paleobiology, especially as it contains a research center specialized in scientific matters.
